Safaricom PLC has today celebrated its 25th anniversary, reflecting on a milestone journey of innovation, inclusion, and impact since the company’s official launch on October 23, 2000.

The telecommunications has over the two and a half decades transitioned from a mobile service provider to a technology company with a social purpose, impacting lives all over Kenya through connectivity, mobile money solutions, and social investments, both locally and across the region.

Safaricom has expanded and innovated through positive partnerships and has recently been able to achieve a milestone of over 50 million mobile subscribers in Kenya — a clear indication of the brand’s strong relationship with its customers. With the introduction of M-PESA the revolutionary mobile money service that now has more than 35 million active users, the company has effectively transformed the financial sector in a way that was previously unimaginable, and in so doing, it has facilitated entrepreneurship and financial inclusion.

The telco has in the past few years, injected a lot of money in network expansion and technological advancement projects, among these projects is the 5G connectivity roll-out that has repositioned Kenya as a leader in digital innovation. Through the technology, the internet speeds are superfast, and it will be easy to use the latest technologies as well as get access to government and enterprise services.

Besides Kenya, Safaricom has ventured into Ethiopia, where it is now providing services to more than 10 million customers following the launch in 2022.
