Safaricom PLC has announced the full restoration of M-Pesa services following a scheduled system upgrade carried out early Monday morning.

The exercise, which took place between 12:30 am and 3:30 am on September 22, temporarily disrupted all M-Pesa services, including airtime purchases.

In a statement, the telecommunications company confirmed that the platform is now fully operational. “We look forward to serving you better and providing you with seamless experiences,” Safaricom said, while apologising for any inconvenience caused.

The telco explained that the maintenance window was deliberately scheduled at night to minimise disruption for customers.

It also expressed gratitude to subscribers for their patience and continued support, reaffirming its commitment to delivering transformative digital and financial solutions.

M-Pesa, which marked its 18th anniversary earlier this year, has grown into Africa’s most influential mobile money service, serving more than 70 million customers in over 170 countries.

In Kenya alone, the service has transformed financial inclusion, lifting access to financial services from 26.7 percent in 2006 to 83.7 percent in 2021.

By 2024, M-Pesa had generated over Sh139.9 billion in revenue and continues to support more than one million businesses and agents across markets including Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Ghana and Egypt.
