Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has launched a new political party, the United Patriotic Movement (UPM), as he prepares to chart his own path to the 2027 elections without UDA.
The senator made it clear he no longer sees a future with UDA, especially after President William Ruto publicly praised his political rival, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, calling him a close friend during a recent tour.
“How can I trust a party where my main opponent is being embraced by the president?” Khalwale posed.
Khalwale says UPM is a youth-driven party, run by university students and young professionals.
“It’s time for fresh energy and new ideas,” he said.
Feeling sidelined, Khalwale is now appealing to President Ruto, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, and Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to support his gubernatorial bid in 2027 — reminding them of how he stood by them during the last campaign.
“I took the president to Western, I campaigned for him. Now I ask for the same support,” he said.
With UPM, Khalwale hopes to rally young people and build a movement that puts Kakamega’s future in their hands.
