The Government has issued a strong appeal for calm, justice, and national unity following recent confrontations between police officers and civilians, including a controversial shooting incident that left one civilian hospitalized.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, Government Spokesperson Hon. Senator (Dr.) Isaac Mwaura, CBS, acknowledged public concern over the incident involving a police officer who allegedly shot an unarmed civilian.

He confirmed that the injured individual is recovering in hospital and assured the public that the matter is under investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).”Such actions are unacceptable,” said Dr. Mwaura. “Justice must be served and accountability will be pursued as per the provisions of the law.”

While condemning the use of excessive force by law enforcement, the Government also expressed concern over instances of public disorder during recent protests.

The statement cited cases where groups reportedly provoked officers, engaged in verbal attacks, and damaged property actions the Government says undermine the essence of peaceful protest.”Violence from any side is unacceptable. Our democracy gives room for dissent, but not disorder and disobedience,” the statement read.

Dr. Mwaura urged citizens to remain calm and allow institutions such as IPOA, the Judiciary, and Parliament to conduct independent investigations. He further called on political, civil society, and community leaders to foster peace and dialogue instead of fueling division.

The Government also warned political actors against exploiting the situation for incitement or political gain. “True leadership demands responsibility and commitment to God and country,” the spokesperson emphasized.

In a bid to prevent future clashes, the Government encouraged Parliament to enact laws that designate specific public spaces for peaceful demonstrations.

According to Dr. Mwaura, this would protect the right to picket while ensuring other citizens are not disrupted.”Let us protect the hard-won gains of our republic. Let us rise above division and recommit to the values that bind us together as one nation under God,” he added.
