Harriet Okach has made history as the first woman to be appointed Chairperson of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), following the resignation of Alexander ‘Sasha’ Mutai.

Her appointment was officially confirmed on Thursday, a week after Mutai stepped down during a contentious special general meeting (SGM) held at the RFUEA Grounds, where a vote of no confidence had been tabled by member clubs.

In her first address as Chairperson, Okach expressed gratitude and called for unity within the rugby community.

“I’m humbled to be entrusted with this position,” she said. “Thank you to the affiliates, the KRU Board, and stakeholders for your support. To our secretariat and playing unit, thank you for keeping the game going despite recent challenges. Sports unite us—let’s come together to grow the game we all love. Asante sana.”

Prior to her appointment, Okach served on the KRU board as head of Marketing and Commercial. She was also the former treasurer of Kisumu RFC and joined the KRU board in 2023.

Okach will serve in the role for the remainder of the term until new elections are held.
