ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with key industry players to drive digital transformation and economic growth.

This comes after he hosted Safaricom PLC CEO Peter Ndegwa and his team at the Ministry headquarters for a courtesy call and high-level discussions on key issues affecting the telecommunications sector.

During the meeting, CS Kabogo emphasized the importance of continuous engagement with stakeholders to better understand both the opportunities and the challenges within the industry.

He noted that such collaboration is essential in shaping policies that are relevant and impactful, especially in catalyzing inclusive economic development.

The discussions touched on several pressing concerns in the sector, including the growing challenge of device affordability, which continues to slow down the uptake of 4G and 5G networks across the country.

The two teams also explored possible measures to address the high cost of voice and data services and deliberated on ways to make connectivity more accessible and affordable to the public.

The meeting further addressed the government’s ongoing efforts to expand digital infrastructure and ensure equitable access, especially in light of new players such as satellite service providers entering the local market.

CS Kabogo and the Safaricom team also explored how the telco giant can complement the government’s digital skilling initiative aimed at empowering the youth with essential ICT skills.
