Excitement is building as the highly anticipated athletics event returns to Afraha Stadium in Nakuru County, marking a significant milestone for the region after a 10-year absence.
Afraha Stadium, which has been a central part of Nakuru’s athletic history, has undergone a major facelift, replacing its dusty Murram track with a modern blue tartan surface. This upgrade sets the stage for a truly world-class competition on April 4-5, 2025.
The Fourth leg of the AK/Betika Track and Field weekend meet promises to be an electrifying event, featuring over one thousand athletes competing in 11 track and field disciplines, including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, and 10,000m walk, alongside field events like hammer throw, discus throw, and triple jump.
David Otiti, the Treasurer of Athletics Kenya (AK) Nakuru region and a former athlete who competed in the 1980s, expressed his excitement for the event’s return.
He noted that Nakuru, situated in the heart of Kenya’s athletics-rich regions, is set to attract top athletes from across the country.
“It’s great opportunity for athletics to come and compete as they gear up for international competitions, including the Tokyo World Championships in August,” said Atiti. The event is part of the national athletics calendar, following meets in Mumias, Thika, and Kapsabet. With so much anticipation surrounding the event, it's clear that Nakuru is ready to once again shine on the athletics map.Participants are encouraged to register and collect their bib numbers at Afraha Stadium on April 3, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
