The government has promised to expedite resolution of high pending bills which are hurting the overall economy.
Speaking at the opening of the 24th Ordinary Session of the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC) meeting at his official residence in Karen, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the government cleared over Sh100 billion in the last financial year.
According to him, the National Treasury had an outstanding national government pending bills of Sh516.27 billion by June 30,2024, down from Sh622.82 billion in the same period in 2023.
Initial comparative reports for 26 counties show a significant reduction from Sh43.6 billion to Sh33.9 billion as of June 30.
"We acknowledge this improvement, and I urge County governments to collaborate closely with the Controller of Budget to implement recommended measures to effectively address this issue through our budgetary process,"Gachagua said.
The DP said During the last financial year (2023/24), The National Treasury transferred 354.5 Billion Shillings to counties by June 30, 2024, an equivalent of 92 per cent of the total equitable share due to counties.
"The outstanding amount of 30.83 Billion Shillings for June was released in July. This was attributed to a short fall in revenue collections and the limited fiscal space."
