President William Ruto officially conferred city status on Eldoret, celebrating its remarkable transformation from a small farming center into a bustling metropolis known as the “City of Champions.”

During a ceremony at Eldoret Sports Club, the President hailed Eldoret’s role in Kenya’s political and economic history, highlighting its significance as a hub of agriculture, industry, and athletics.

President Ruto acknowledged Eldoret’s rich and diverse history, pointing to its roots in the early 20th century as a railway town known as “64” and its evolution into a cosmopolitan urban center.

“Eldoret is a city where dreams are born and champions are made,” he remarked. The President emphasized Eldoret’s contribution to various sectors, including agro-industrial investments, trade, tourism, and finance, solidifying its place as a key economic player in Kenya.

He attributed the city’s growth to devolution, which has empowered Uasin Gishu County to harness its agricultural potential and drive development.

Eldoret now joins Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru as Kenya’s fifth city. President Ruto stressed the importance of urban planning, governance, and sustainability to ensure Eldoret’s future prosperity as a smart, livable city.

These initiatives aim to enhance infrastructure, improve living conditions, and foster economic growth in the city.

In closing, President Ruto lauded the people of Uasin Gishu for their dedication and vision in bringing Eldoret to this milestone.

“Eldoret is a city ready to win the race to the future,” he said before officially conferring city status on Eldoret.
