Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting small-scale traders in Nairobi, following an early morning meeting with market representatives from various parts of the city.
The engagement focused on the challenges facing traders operating in key business hubs, including Wakulima, Gikomba, Muthurwa, Kariokor, Nyamakima, and River Road, among others.
Speaking ,Kindiki acknowledged the vital role of small-scale traders in driving the economy and emphasized the need for the National Government to complement efforts by the Nairobi City County Government to enhance the traders’ working conditions.
“We have agreed on specific interventions by the National Government to supplement the ongoing initiatives by the Nairobi City County Government. These interventions will focus on improving market infrastructure, enhancing security, and providing better access to financial resources for the traders,” said Kindiki.
The Deputy President highlighted that the markets mentioned—including the Country Bus terminus, Railways, Pumwani Road, Bus Station, and OTC—serve as critical commercial centers supporting thousands of livelihoods within the Central Business District (CBD).
Kindiki pledged the government’s full support in ensuring that traders in these markets can operate in a conducive environment, free from challenges such as congestion, insecurity, and lack of essential amenities.
“We value the resilience and contribution of our small-scale traders to the national economy. It is our responsibility to ensure they are empowered to thrive in their businesses,” he added.
