Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has declared that the Azimio coalition is on the brink of dissolution, attributing the crisis to perceived betrayal by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking on Spice FM’s morning show on Monday, Wamalwa accused the opposition coalition of losing its direction and indicated that DAP-K would soon announce its formal exit from Azimio.

Wamalwa criticized ODM’s actions, calling them a threat to democratic values.

“As Azimio, we have lost our way and failed the people of Kenya. We are addressing this issue, and you will hear more from us soon,” he stated.

He expressed regret over President Ruto’s successful undermining of the opposition by collaborating with ODM, a key member of the Azimio coalition. Wamalwa had previously hinted at leaving the coalition due to rising dishonesty and discord within the alliance.

He condemned ODM members who have joined the government, stating that their actions are valid grounds for the coalition’s dissolution.

“Kenyans are demanding that this government be removed, but some of our partners want it to stay. These are irreconcilable differences, which justify a separation,” Wamalwa said.

Wamalwa’s comments come after Azimio leader Raila Odinga admitted to aiding in stabilizing President Ruto’s administration during recent Gen-Z protests, which had called for the government’s ouster. This revelation has further fueled internal conflict within the coalition.

The tension within Azimio has been exacerbated by Narc Kenya’s formal withdrawal from the coalition.

In a recent letter, Narc Kenya cited “unattainable prevailing political developments” as the reason for its exit, effective immediately.

President Ruto’s recent cabinet appointments, which included four senior ODM members—John Mbadi (National Treasury), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy and Petroleum), Hassan Joho (Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs), and Wycliffe Oparanya (Co-operatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development)—have also stirred controversy.

Despite criticism, President Ruto has defended his decisions as essential for accelerating Kenya’s development and fostering unity within his administration.
