Murang’a-based pastor James Irungu was forced to end his bid to set a new national tree-hugging record after collapsing more than 79 hours into the gruelling challenge.

The 30-year-old had set out to complete an 80-hour continuous tree-hugging marathon to spotlight cancer awareness.

Spectators in Murang’a Town quickly intervened when Irungu collapsed, rushing him for medical care. Officials later confirmed that he was in stable condition.

The challenge required Irungu to remain standing and embrace a tree without interruption, pushing his physical endurance to the limit.

Since the start of the marathon, the site had drawn large crowds, with supporters singing, dancing, and cheering him on in a show of solidarity.

Celebrations erupted earlier when Irungu surpassed the 72-hour benchmark previously achieved by tree-planting advocate Truphena Muthoni in neighbouring Nyeri County.

Muthoni had earlier been acknowledged for a 48-hour tree-hugging feat, while her 72-hour attempt is still awaiting official ratification by Guinness World Records.

Irungu began the challenge on Sunday and was expected to conclude it on Thursday at 5:27am, shortly after reaching the 80-hour target.

Throughout the marathon, he received encouragement from social media influencers, local leaders, artists, and fellow activists, including Muthoni, who visited to offer her support.

Despite the abrupt end, Irungu reiterated that his mission went beyond record-breaking.

He said the effort was meant to honour cancer patients and survivors while drawing public attention to the importance of early screening, treatment, and sustained support.
