Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested four traffic police officers who were caught extorting money from motorists in the guise of traffic law enforcement.
The four include Cpl Rachael Aiyabei, PC John Oluoch, Cpl Cynthia Kemoi and PC Philip Sitienei.
In a statement on Sunday, September 1, EACC reported that Aiyabei and Oluoch were apprehended along Sotik-Kericho Road, while Kemoi and Sitienei were arrested along Kericho-Nakuru Road near Kaisugu Tea Factory.
Before the arrests on Tuesday, the anti-corruption agency had observed the officers for several days collecting bribes without doing anything at all towards traffic law enforcement.
The suspects were escorted to EACC South Rift Regional Offices in Nakuru, where they were processed and later released on bail pending the finalisation of the probe.
The commission reminded members of the public that while the majority view bribery as petty corruption, its implications are gross as it compromises road safety to the extent of claiming lives.
"Non-compliance with the established road safety regulations on account of payment of bribes is a notable cause of the road accidents witnessed on Kenyan roads. All forms of corruption may be reported to EACC through Toll-Free Line 1551 or email address report@integrity.go.ke," said EACC.
