The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has stepped up its political mobilisation in Murang’a County, holding high-level consultations with emerging leaders as the 2027 race begins to take shape.

UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan on Wednesday hosted Murang’a senatorial aspirant Patrick Muigai at the party’s Hustler Plaza headquarters in Nairobi, in what insiders describe as part of a broader strategy to consolidate the party’s grassroots network.

The meeting focused on how to popularise the government’s development agenda at the local level, while also mapping out early strategies to strengthen UDA’s presence in the vote-rich Mount Kenya region ahead of the next general election.

Also present were youth leaders Patrick Irungu, Rogers Macharia and Peter Thiongo, signalling the party’s intention to tap into younger networks as it rebuilds its political base.

The renewed push comes at a time when Murang’a, once seen as firmly within UDA’s grip, is increasingly becoming politically fluid.

Incumbent Senator Joe Nyutu has in recent months emerged as a vocal critic of the government, even skipping key presidential tours in the county and publicly questioning stalled development projects.

His growing alignment with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political camp has further complicated the dynamics, with analysts now viewing the county as a potential battleground rather than a guaranteed stronghold.

Against this backdrop, UDA’s engagement with new aspirants like Muigai is seen as an attempt to reset the political landscape and identify loyal candidates ahead of what is shaping up to be a competitive contest.

Party officials are keen to avoid internal fractures that have weakened its grip in parts of the Mount Kenya region, especially as rival formations begin to gain traction on the ground.

The emphasis on grassroots mobilisation, youth involvement and messaging around government projects suggests a long-term strategy aimed at regaining political momentum.

The meeting underscores a broader shift within UDA, from governing to campaign mode, as it seeks to defend its influence in key regions while countering emerging political threats.

With alliances shifting and new players entering the race, Murang’a is now shaping up as one of the counties to watch closely in the run-up to 2027.
