The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has asked Kenyans to share their views on planned changes to how teachers are registered in the country.
In a notice released on Tuesday, the commission said it wants to amend Regulation 20 of the Code of Regulations for Teachers. This rule mainly deals with the qualifications needed for someone to become a registered teacher.
TSC said the changes are meant to match the teaching profession with new education standards and improve how teachers are trained and approved.
The commission is now calling on teachers and members of the public to send their views before May 13.
If the changes go through, they could affect who qualifies to join the teaching profession.
TSC says the new rules will make it clearer what academic and professional papers are needed for registration. It also plans to tighten entry into the profession so that only qualified people are allowed to teach.
At the same time, the commission wants stronger powers to deal with discipline cases. Under the proposed changes, TSC will be able to suspend or remove teachers who break professional rules.
The new plan will also give the commission more control over teacher training, renewal of certificates and checking of standards.
TSC has invited interested individuals to submit their opinions via e-mail within the set deadline.
This comes in line with other initiatives geared towards improving the education sector by ensuring that teachers meet the required qualifications at school.
