National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has held bilateral talks with a senior United States Treasury official to review Kenya’s macroeconomic outlook, ongoing engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and opportunities to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting with Eric Meyer, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Africa and the Middle East at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, took place on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF/World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to the National Treasury, the discussions focused on Kenya’s economic outlook, the status of its engagement with the IMF and opportunities for technical cooperation and development financing.

The two officials also reviewed preparations for the forthcoming IMF Article IV consultations, with an IMF mission expected in Nairobi in early December 2026.

Article IV consultations involve the IMF’s assessment of a member country’s economic and financial policies, providing an opportunity to review economic performance, identify risks and discuss policy measures.

The discussions also covered progress towards publication of Kenya’s Governance Diagnostic Report, which forms part of the country’s ongoing engagement on governance and public sector accountability.

The report is expected to contribute to discussions around governance-related issues, an area that has featured in Kenya’s engagement with international financial institutions.

Mbadi and Meyer further examined remittance flows from the United States to Kenya and opportunities to deepen technical cooperation, including assistance from the U.S. Treasury in the emerging field of digital assets.

Remittances remain an important source of foreign exchange for Kenya, supporting household incomes and contributing to the country’s external financial position. Cooperation in digital assets also presents an opportunity for discussions on evolving financial technologies and their implications for economic management.

Development financing and health cooperation featured in the talks, with the two sides exploring opportunities to expand engagement through U.S. development financing frameworks and advance shared health priorities.

The officials also exchanged views on the Business Laws (Amendment) Act and its implications for development financing and partnerships, highlighting the importance of policy and legislative developments in shaping the environment for investment and economic cooperation.

The meeting forms part of Kenya’s continued economic diplomacy with international partners as the government seeks to strengthen financial cooperation, attract development support and sustain dialogue on economic policy.

The discussions come as Kenya continues to engage the IMF on economic policy and governance matters, with the planned December mission expected to provide a further platform for reviewing the country’s economic conditions and policy priorities.

The National Treasury said the engagement provided an opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest and explore areas where Kenya and the United States could deepen technical and development cooperation.
