Frank Caprio, the widely admired U.S. judge and social media personality best known for his compassion-driven rulings on the television show Caught in Providence, has died at the age of 88.

Caprio passed away following a battle with pancreatic cancer, his family announced on his official Instagram account. He was remembered for his “warmth,” “humour,” and a steadfast belief in the “goodness of people.”

Over a distinguished 40-year career in Providence, Rhode Island, Judge Caprio became a national and international icon for his unique courtroom style, marked by empathy, understanding, and light-hearted moments.

He often took into account the personal circumstances of those who appeared before him, earning him the affectionate title, “the nicest judge in the world.”

Clips from Caught in Providence, in which he presided over real-life minor infractions with heart and humour, have gone viral globally, racking up billions of views across platforms.

He once invited children to sit with him behind the bench, and even introduced a “mini-judge” toy modeled after himself, further endearing him to fans worldwide.

In a 2019 interview, Caprio described his courtroom as offering a “slice of life” that resonated far beyond Rhode Island, reflecting everyday challenges faced by people across the country.

Judge Caprio’s son, David, expressed the family’s gratitude for the outpouring of love and support. “In honour of his legacy, we encourage everyone to spread a little kindness,” he said.

During its run, Caught in Providence was nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards. Judge Caprio himself received two personal nominations in 2024.

The show’s producers, Debmar-Mercury, praised his “unique brand of compassion and common-sense approach,” adding, “We will miss him dearly.”

After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023, Caprio told his followers he was “fully prepared to fight as hard as I can” and thanked them for their continued support.

Judge Caprio is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce, their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
