The government has plans to introduce fresh regulations to ensure that users of the social media platform TikTok are safe while using the platform. The plans were presented during the TikTok Safer Internet Summit 2026 by William Kabogo. The plans are mainly targeting the safety of users, particularly young people
The government also wants to ensure that users are provided with better means of protection against various forms of scams, cybercrime, harassments, among other negative content on TikTok. Kabogo also emphasized that in order for we, as a country, to continue enjoying our digital gains, we need to address some of the issues that are currently affecting users, including misinformation, scams, among other content that may be harmful to children.
The government is also taking steps towards working with various companies that are involved in technology to ensure that users are able to easily report content that is harmful or suspected of being harmful on TikTok. The government is also taking measures to ensure that cybersecurity is enhanced in order for users, as well as digital businesses, to be able to identify any forms of cyber threats that may be directed towards them.
Kabogo also emphasized that some issues requiring attention are raising awareness among users regarding data privacy, noting that some of them are not aware of how their data is being shared.
The government also recognizes that through social media platforms such as TikTok, youths are being provided with opportunities that are helping them grow, including through digital content creation and other forms of entrepreneurship that are taking place on the internet.
For instance, some of the youths are using social media platforms to make some money, including through sharing of ideas and other forms of self-expression. The government is taking steps towards ensuring that innovations are taking place in the digital world, but also ensuring that users are protected in order for them to grow alongside other forms of digital commerce that are taking place.
