Tension continues to grip West Pokot County following a chilling confession by suspects arrested in connection with a spate of abductions, killings, and allegations of cannibalism that have rocked Bendera village.

Residents of Bendera village in West Pokot County turned up in large numbers as police led the excavation exercise in search of human remains suspected to be abducted, killed and consumed in what seemed a cult-like behavior

However the irate residents took their anger to the streets blocking the roads. Police were forced to disperse the crowds using teargas after road blockades disrupted transport and caused panic in the area.

County Deputy Police Commander Joseph Yakan said that they have arrested 16 suspects linked to the murders adding that the police are still pursuing the main suspect who is still at large.

Last week, the body of a seven-year-old was found decomposing at a maize plantation, which led to revelations and arrests of the suspects and their houses were also torched.

School uniforms for young children were also found. Residents also recovered bones and teeth they believed to be of humans, which the police have taken for forensic audit.
