Speculation Grows as Odinga Reportedly Mulls Stepping Down as ODM Party Leader

Raila Odinga, one of Kenya’s most influential political figures, is reportedly considering stepping down as the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after nearly two decades at the helm.

Odinga, who has been a dominant force in Kenyan politics since the early 2000s, has not yet made an official announcement.

However, sources within ODM hint that the long-serving leader is exploring a strategic retirement from the party leadership, focusing more on elder statesmanship and mentorship roles.

Recently, Odinga said that he will not concentrate with the local politics considering the magnitude of the possibilities he will be given and the position as the African leader.

Reliable sources have told Tukio.co.ke that this development has sparked widespread political discussions, with analysts suggesting that Odinga’s exit could significantly reshape Kenya’s political landscape, particularly within the ODM where youngster’s are eyeing to succeed him.

Political analyst Edwin Mwangi suggests that Odinga’s departure would leave a void not only in ODM but also in the broader opposition space.

“Raila has been the face of opposition politics for decades. His absence could lead to a leadership vacuum, forcing ODM to undergo internal restructuring,” Mwangi remarked.

Another analyst, Njambi Wambui , commented on the potential ripple effect within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, which was built around Odinga’s leadership.

“Without Raila at the forefront, ODM might struggle to maintain cohesion, particularly with competing interests from other emerging leaders who believe in democracy ,” Wambui explained.

She further noted that Odinga’s stepping down could open doors for fresh leadership but might also weaken the party’s influence in national politics.

Despite the uncertainties, some see Odinga’s potential exit as an opportunity for ODM to rebrand and appeal to younger voters.

Political commentator Josephine Mwangi believes that “ODM could use this moment to redefine its political agenda and attract a new generation of leaders who can steer the party into the future.”
