Suspected killer Benson Mwangi.

Detectives have stepped up investigations into the killing of 60-year-old Millicent Wahura Mwangi, whose body was found along the Malewa–Kipipiri road in Nyandarua Central Sub-County.

The matter was first reported at Olkalou Police Station on November 11 as a missing person case, but investigators soon suspected foul play.

Three days later, on November 14, members of the public at Rumathi village, about 37 kilometres from Olkalou, discovered human remains abandoned by the roadside.

Officers from Kipipiri Police Station visited the scene, documented the findings and launched a search for additional evidence, though this initial effort did not yield further results.

The remains were transferred to the JM Kariuki Memorial Funeral Home for preservation, postmortem examination and identification.

On November 15, the family formally identified the remains as those of Millicent Wahura Mwangi, prompting detectives to treat the case as murder.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit, working alongside Nyandarua Central Sub-County detectives, then launched a hunt for the suspect.

Following forensic-led inquiries, detectives arrested Benson Mwangi, the deceased’s second-born son, on November 20 at a hideout in Kamulu.

He was arraigned before the Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court in Olkalou on November 24, where investigators obtained 21-day custodial orders. He remains in custody pending a mention scheduled for January 19, 2026.

On December 23, 2025, homicide detectives and forensic experts carried out a scene re-enactment with the suspect.

The team later moved to River Malewa, where an underwater search led to the recovery of key exhibits, including a machete believed to have been used in the crime, as well as bedding items allegedly disposed of after the incident.

Investigators say they are continuing to piece together the final moments of the deceased as they gather evidence to build a strong case for prosecution.
