Simba Cement has been given the green light to resume operations in Rabai, Kilifi County three months after its closure due to community-related grievances.
In a statement, Rabai Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Lenkarie, while urging the company to discharge corporate social responsibilities to the full extent, appealed to the residents to remain peaceful.
Nevertheless, there were some local people who openly expressed their dissent with the reopening, saying that the company has not discharged its obligations in the community.
However, Simba Cement through its Planning Director responded to the concerns raised by committing to local employment, initiating community projects, and holding regular engagement forums with residents.
The reopening is anticipated to uplift economic activities in the area, although the community and other stakeholders remain watchful that lasting peace will be dependent on the capacity of the company to keep its promises and have continuous communications with the locals.
