President William Ruto has announced that Kenya is strengthening cooperation with Azerbaijan in the energy sector through State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) in its strategic drive to focus on investments in the electricity generation and energy security.

Addressing the World Urban Forum opening in Baku, President Ruto announced that Kenya’s Ministry of energy intends to work with SOCAR in exploration production refinery and renewable energy to meet its ambitious energy plans.

“We explored the possibility of SOCAR investing in the proposed East African oil refinery.” said Ruto

The Head of State observed that Kenya targeted 10,000 MW over the next ten years and that opportunity in competitive renewable energy and natural gas was seen to be pivotal.

President Ruto also disclosed that he had engaged Rovshan Naajaf on the fringes of the world forum, where the two presidents discussed avenues for increased cooperation in the energy industry.

Among the key areas discussed was the possibility of SOCAR investing in the proposed East African oil refinery project, which Kenya views as a strategic initiative to strengthen regional fuel processing capacity and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
