Opinion: Is Ruto-Gachagua's alleged Fallout Real or Imagined?

By: Joseph Mutua Ndonga

Recent political speculation surrounding a potential fallout between President William Ruto and his Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, has dominated headlines.

This speculation was fueled when DP Gachagua missed a high-profile church event in Nyeri County, where President Ruto was in attendance.

The media was quick to interpret the absence as a sign of growing political tensions. However, just a day later, the two leaders shared a stage at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi, casting doubt on the rumors of discord.

At the event, DP Gachagua addressed the speculation head-on, stating, “As you can see, I’m here with my boss, President William Ruto. As his principal assistant, my job is to help him realize his vision and agenda for Kenya. I know he means well for the people of Kenya. His achievements so far attest to this.”

His remarks and the evident rapport between the two leaders on stage suggested that their working relationship remains strong, despite reports to the contrary.

The media’s portrayal of DP Gachagua’s absence in Nyeri painted a different picture. An empty chair reserved for the Deputy President became the focal point of news stories that questioned the state of the Ruto-Gachagua alliance. Many interpreted this as a sign of deepening political rifts.

However, DP Gachagua’s communication team swiftly clarified that his absence was due to a scheduling conflict, as he was attending a church event in Kirinyaga County that had run longer than expected.

Despite this clarification, some media outlets continued to speculate about the relationship between the two leaders. President Ruto’s remarks during the Nyeri event, where he called on elected leaders to avoid premature political campaigns and instead focus on delivering on their promises, were interpreted by some as veiled criticism of his deputy.

However, this interpretation appears speculative, as the President has made similar statements on various occasions, including during his recent tours of Western Kenya.

His message has consistently been about staying focused on governance and avoiding political distractions.

In previous interviews, President Ruto has addressed questions about his relationship with DP Gachagua directly, expressing surprise at the notion of a falling out.

“Gachagua is my deputy, and I cannot discuss him with you here. There is no love lost between him and myself,” the President stated during one such interview, suggesting that the perceived tensions may be more a creation of the media than a reflection of reality.

Given these developments, it seems premature to conclude that there is a serious rift between the President and his Deputy.

Both leaders have publicly affirmed their commitment to working together, and there is no concrete evidence of a breakdown in their partnership.

For now, the talk of a fallout remains speculative, with critics and observers advised to wait for any substantive confirmation from the leaders themselves.

In the world of politics, speculation often fills the void left by incomplete information.

However, until there is direct confirmation from either President Ruto or DP Gachagua, it is wise to approach rumors of their political split with caution.

Only time will tell whether these reports are grounded in reality or merely the product of overactive imaginations.
