Kenya has taken a step forward in the fight against childhood cancer after the launch of a new treatment unit and a patient hostel in Nairobi.
The new Paediatric Haemato-Oncology Outpatient Unit has been opened at Kenyatta National Hospital, alongside Phase One of the Lions Hope Hostel, which will host children undergoing treatment and their caregivers.
Speaking during the launch, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the government is working to improve cancer care for children by investing in better diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
He said the new unit will help doctors detect cancer earlier and manage cases better, giving children a higher chance of recovery.
The Lions Hope Hostel is expected to take care of the challenge faced by many families who come from other regions to access treatment at the hospitals in Nairobi. These families are compelled to find accommodation close to these hospitals.
Since this facility has been erected, patients and caregivers will be able to remain in one place throughout treatment. They will be able to attend to regular hospital consultations and receive the necessary treatment.
This project is one of those planned under the country’s cancer control program and strategy aimed at enhancing treatment and forming strong partnerships.
Partner contribution has led to the implementation of this project. The Lions Club International Foundation is one of the partners.
The hospital has been equipped with a machine that will enable doctors to deliver treatments to cancerous tumours without affecting healthy body organs and tissues. It has also acquired some cancer treatment equipment.
According to health experts, the new unit and other equipment will enhance cancer treatment of children and make life easier for these families.
This marks a shift towards enhanced organization and treatment of cancer patients in Kenya.
