Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has assured the Senate that the country remains generally safe and secure, attributing the stability to enhanced operational capabilities within the National Police Service.

Appearing before the Senate plenary, Murkomen updated lawmakers on the state of national security and ongoing reforms aimed at improving government service delivery.

“Through the Usajili Mashinani initiative, we have significantly expanded access to national identity cards for underserved populations, streamlined processing, reduced waiting times, and cleared the backlog of unprinted IDs,” he said.

Murkomen told Senators that crime levels, including cases of abductions and alleged extrajudicial killings, have declined in recent months.

However, he raised concern over what he termed as emerging “self-abduction cases,” saying they were complicating the response to genuine missing persons reports.

He urged the Judiciary to take firm action against individuals found to be staging such incidents, noting that they undermine security operations and public trust.

“We call upon the Judiciary to hold such offenders to account,” he said.
