A multi-agency security team has intensified operations against illicit alcohol in Bungoma and Kisumu counties as the government increases its focus on hunting down illegal brewers and protecting its citizens from dangerous alcoholic substances.
In Bungoma County, security agents raided the Mitua area of Bungoma North Sub-County and destroyed about 3,200 liters of kangara in a raid on illegal brews.
The authorities claimed the large scale destruction is an indication of the existence of a vibrant trade in illicit brews within the region and the resolve of security agents to tackle the vice.
The operation is part of an ongoing countrywide crackdown to stop the manufacture and trade of hazardous alcoholic drinks said to have caused serious health problems and deaths in different parts of the country.
According to police report from the operations section in Nairobi, officers based in Kisumu County, operating within the Masogo division intercepted a motorbike which is suspected to have been ferrying 60 liters of chang’aa for sale. The suspect abandoned the motorcycle and escaped; an investigation is ongoing to apprehend and arraign him.
NPS reported that the ongoing enforcement efforts are instrumental in alleviating the societal impacts of alcohol-related harm by protecting families and ensuring safer communities across the country.
The statement from the National Police Service (NPS) again appealed to wananchi to continue to working closely with NPS by reporting illegal trade in alcohol to the closest police station.
