Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has declared his intention to challenge Governor Johnson Sakaja for the city’s top seat in the 2027 General Election, promising to fix problems facing residents.

Mosiria made the announcement on Sunday, October 11, during a church service at Jesus Is Alive Ministries, led by Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.

“If you want change in Nairobi, Mosiria is the change. I will fix this city. In front of you is Mr Fix It,” he said.

The county official said his experience working in different departments of the Nairobi County government had prepared him for the job.

Mosiria has served in the health and environment departments before his current role in citizen engagement and customer service.

He gained public attention through activities such as inspections at health facilities, enforcement of environmental regulations and responses to complaints from residents over noise pollution.

His declaration comes days after he revealed that former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had asked him to arrange a meeting with Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i to discuss his political future.

Mosiria said he was seeking their guidance and possible endorsement of his gubernatorial bid.

He has also expressed support for Matiang’i, who is positioning himself for a bigger political role ahead of the 2027 elections.

The move places Mosiria among several politicians seeking to unseat Sakaja, who was elected governor in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance ticket.

Other politicians who have expressed interest in the seat include Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Embakasi North MP James Gakuya.

Mosiria has previously said he wants to face Owino at the ballot, challenging him to a contest for the governor’s seat.

During his earlier remarks on the planned bid, Mosiria urged political aspirants to focus on their agendas rather than violence and intimidation.

He has maintained that his decision to seek the seat is driven by what he describes as a call to serve Nairobi residents.

The 2027 contest is expected to attract several candidates seeking to take control of City Hall, with service delivery, sanitation, healthcare and infrastructure likely to feature prominently in the campaigns.
