Military Families Get Practical Skills as ‘Tufuzu’ Training Starts at Embakasi

Families of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel are set to benefit from a training programme that will help them acquire some valuable skills that will enable them to earn a living, following the launch of the training programme called ‘Tufuzu.’ The training was officialy launched on January 28, 2026, by the Military Wives Association of Kenya (MWAK) and the Family Group Foundation.

Speaking during the launch, Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Ketter said that taking care of military families was as important as taking care of soldiers at the front line.

“When families are empowered, our officers can serve the country better. This programme will empower our dependants with some valuable skills that will help them stand on their own,” Lt Gen Ketter said.

Lt Gen Ketter praised the partnership that resulted in the training programme, explaining that it will not only help military families but also help many other people across the country by training them and helping them make a living and support other people.

MWAK chairperson Grace Kahariri explained that the training was evidence of the association’s longstanding dedication to improving the lives of military families. She encouraged the trainees to make the most of the training, saying that the skills they learn could help them in the future even after the training ends.

“These are skills that people need every day. You can use them to get a job, start a small business or support your family,” she told the trainees.

Family Group Foundation Executive Director John Wamiri said the training is useful and significant to the lives of the trainees. Explaining that the training will not only be interactive, but also the trainees will be tested to ensure they are able to apply what they learn to their lives.

“This is about quality and sustainability. We want trainees to leave here confident, skilled and able to earn respect through their work,” he said.

The training was attended by Embakasi Garrison Commander Brigadier Jackson Lesaiyo, Defence Headquarters Chief of Compensation and Welfare Brigadier Rodah Mwasigwa, senior officials, MWAK officials, and soldiers.

The Tufuzu training programme is part of the efforts aimed at supporting military families and helping them build a brighter future away from the military.
