Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has intensified efforts to unite the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election after hosting Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi team for talks on Tuesday.

The meeting, held at Matiang’i’s office in Karen, came just before the team embarks on a political tour of Western Kenya, a region expected to play a key role in the next presidential election.

In a statement after the meeting, Matiang’i said the discussions focused on strengthening coordination within the United Alternative Government and aligning the opposition’s strategy ahead of 2027.

“Our discussions focused on strengthening strategic coordination across the United Alternative Government and aligning our efforts as we continue to offer Kenyans a credible, principled and people centered alternative ahead of the 2027 General Election,” Matiang’i said.

The former Interior CS said the opposition leaders also agreed to hold regular consultations as they seek to build a united front.

“We remain committed to regular consultations and purposeful engagement as we work together to restore accountable leadership, uphold constitutional governance and put our country firmly back on the path of national renewal,” he added.

The meeting comes at a time when opposition leaders are stepping up consultations and grassroots mobilisation as the race to succeed President William Ruto in 2027 begins to gather momentum.

Sifuna, who has been leading the Linda Mwananchi movement, is expected to spearhead the Western Kenya tour as the opposition seeks to rally support and strengthen its presence in the region.

The latest meeting also signals growing cooperation between Matiang’i and other opposition leaders as they work towards forming a united political front ahead of the next General Election.
