Radio personality Maina Kageni has defended singer Bien Baraza following after his performance at the Africa Forward Summit concert in Nairobi.

Bien, a celebrated musician, took the stage dressed in an outfit inspired by former Zairean leader Mobutu Sese Seko, sparking reactions online.

On his morning show, Maina said he doesn’t understand why some Kenyans were upset about Bien representing the country at a high-profile continental event.

“Not understanding why there is some backlash from a section of Kenyans about Bien performing at the Africa Forward Summit concert last night. Surely, is there anything wrong with him representing Kenyans in Africa?”

The controversy began when Bien held interactions with French President Emmanuel Macron at an exclusive dinner with guests including his wife Chiki Kuruka, Chef Dennis Ombachi and actress Sarah Hassan.

Bien quickly defended his participation, insisting meeting with world leaders does not change his identity or his beliefs. “I can sit at a table with global leaders and still remain fully African, fully critical and fully myself,” Bien said.

Maina said Bien’s performance should be celebrated for bringing Kenyan music to an international stage and being embraced by people.
