The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has come out with a public health warning after a very sad occurrence at Kamenu Location, Thika West Sub-County, Kiambu where people killed and slaughtered a hyena.
The statement issued on April 11 2026 said that the animal was found early Saturday morning feeding on poultry carcasses which had been thrown away indiscriminately.
The hyena had been spotted and chased by the public, killed, and slaughtered before the KWS teams came to the scene. Several people reportedly escaped with parts of the carcass, including internal organs.
KWS has warned that since hyenas are scavengers, they can harbor a variety of dangerous diseases that can easily be transmitted to humans. These diseases include Rabies Anthrax Brucellosis besides foodborne diseases like Salmonella infection and E. coli infection.
The agency has issued a strong warning to the public not to handle or consume that meat worrying of serious health risks. Those who might have consumed the carcass have been advised to get medical care immediately.
Besides, KWS has ordered anyone who has the meat to give it up to the authorities at once. The agency stressed that by throwing animal remains in the open endangers human lives.
The incident has sparked new debates about people’s safety, conservation of wild animals, and the compliance of health advisories. The public is advised by the authorities to always be on their guard and to refrain from eating bush meat.
