Senior Kenyan government officials have toured a modern dairy farm in Italy to learn how technology and sustainability can work together to improve livestock production.

Principal Secretary for the State Department for Water and Sanitation, Julius Korir, CBS, accompanied the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, EGH, to Azienda Agricola Pizzo del Prete, a progressive dairy enterprise located in Cerveteri.

The farm, founded in 2008 by brothers Paolo and Pietro Petruzzi, has grown into a leading example of organic dairy farming. It manages about 400 cows, with 140 currently in milk, producing roughly 4,000 litres of milk every day.

During the visit, the delegation observed how the farm uses a compost barn housing system that improves animal comfort while helping manage waste in line with organic standards.

They also saw automatic milking machines and robotic feeding systems that allow farmers to monitor each animal’s health, reduce manual labour, and improve efficiency.

The farm has also invested in solar power, making it largely energy self-sufficient while cutting costs and reducing its carbon footprint.

Mr. Koskei said the visit offered practical lessons on how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand, adding that Kenya could benefit from similar approaches to strengthen its livestock sector.

The officials said the experience highlights the importance of learning from global best practices as the country works to modernise agriculture and support farmers.
