Kenya has signed the Agreement establishing the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to promote inclusive and responsible artificial intelligence development.
ICT Minister Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo, signed the agreement in Shaghai, saying that the government belief that AI must function as a worldwide public good that brings advantage to an immense number of citizens instead of only a few privileged countries.Kabogo said the partnership will help expand practical AI applications across key sectors.
He noted that farmers could receive crop advisory services in Kiswahili through mobile phones, healthcare facilities could improve patient triage, and young software developers would gain fairer access to computing power and AI models.
He also said Kenya’s digital innovation leadership highlighted the country’s leadership in mobile money besides other innovations.
He further expressed Kenya’s readiness to partner with WAICO, the UN, and other multilateral organizations to make sure that artificial intelligence becomes the major engine of sustainable economic growth and development that’s inclusive at every level.
