Kenya has signed a Ksh. 16.4 billion ($126.8 million) deal with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to fund a new programme aimed at improving rural livelihoods and conserving natural resources.

The agreement, signed at the National Treasury by CS John Mbadi and IFAD Regional Director Sara Mbago-Bhunu, will finance the Integrated Natural Resources Management Programme (INReMP). The loan comes with a low 1.41% interest rate and a 25-year repayment plan.

“This programme is not just about conserving the environment it’s about securing rural livelihoods and building resilience,” said CS Mbadi.

INReMP will run in ten counties, including Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisumu, and Migori. It will focus on sustainable land use, stronger rural institutions, and eco-friendly income-generating activities.

IFAD’s Mbago-Bhunu reaffirmed the agency’s support for Kenya’s fight against rural poverty and climate change. The deal adds to IFAD’s growing portfolio in the country, which already supports agriculture, livestock, aquaculture, and rural finance.
