Kenya Railways has continued to position itself as a key driver of Kenya’s transport transformation under the stewardship of Managing Director Philip Mainga, forging strong partnerships aimed at enhancing freight and passenger mobility across the country.
The latest of these collaborations saw Mr. Mainga host a delegation from Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) led by its Chief Executive Officer Paul Okwiri. The meeting focused on exploring a partnership between the two state entities to streamline mass freight and passenger transportation serving the fast-growing Konza City.
As Phase One of Konza Technopolis reaches completion, the demand for efficient transport systems for both people and cargo has grown significantly. Kenya Railways has stepped in as a strategic partner, with plans underway to connect the Konza Railway Station directly to the Technopolis — a move expected to ease movement, enhance logistics, and support the city’s long-term growth as a smart, innovation-driven hub.
“Kenya Railways is proud to be part of Kenya’s transformation journey by ensuring that major development zones like Konza are well connected through modern, safe, and efficient transport systems,”
said Mr. Mainga, reaffirming the corporation’s commitment to supporting the government’s infrastructure agenda.He noted that Kenya Railways’ mandate goes beyond operating trains — it encompasses building strategic linkages that unlock economic potential across regions. “We are integrating rail transport into national development priorities such as industrial parks, special economic zones, and smart cities,” he added.
Under this initiative, a technical team from Kenya Railways drawn from the Engineering, Operations, and Business Development departments will visit Konza City to identify further areas of collaboration, including cargo handling facilities, commuter services, and logistics hubs to support investors and residents.
On his part, Mr. Okwiri hailed Kenya Railways’ proactive engagement, saying the partnership is pivotal in realizing Konza’s vision as a fully connected smart city.
“Transport is the lifeblood of any modern city. Our collaboration with Kenya Railways will ensure Konza remains accessible, competitive, and investor-friendly,” he said.This initiative adds to a growing list of successful collaborations spearheaded by Mr. Mainga’s leadership, including partnerships with Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), and Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) — all aimed at integrating rail transport into Kenya’s broader logistics ecosystem.
Through these alliances, Kenya Railways has expanded its network reach, revitalized commuter rail services, and enhanced cargo movement efficiency across key corridors such as Nairobi–Naivasha, Mombasa–Nairobi, and Nanyuki–Nairobi.
As the country continues to push its infrastructure modernization agenda, Kenya Railways remains at the heart of the transformation — connecting cities, enabling trade, and linking Kenya’s vision of industrial growth with sustainable transport solutions.
