The Kenya Navy today intercepted a non-registered dhow codenamed ‘IGOR’ and seized 1024 kilograms of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of KSh 8.2 billion in Mombasa.
In a statement, the KDF reported that the stateless dhow, which had been under the watch of international drug enforcement agencies, had repeatedly evaded prior crackdowns until its interception.
Kenya Navy Deputy Commander Brigadier Sankale Kiswaa said they suspected the dhow of involvement in narcotics trafficking.
During the operation, six Iranian nationals aboard the vessel were arrested.
They are currently under interrogation pending arraignment once preliminary investigations are concluded.
Initial tests confirmed the substance to be methamphetamine with 98 percent purity, and it is presently undergoing further forensic analysis and documentation.
