Kenya leads Africa in Affordable Housing Ruto

President William Ruto says Kenya is building over 270,000 affordable housing units across more than 200 sites nationwide, creating over 640,000 jobs and expanding access to home ownership. The projects also address informal settlements, restore dignity to communities, and protect agricultural land by curbing fragmentation.

Speaking at the second African Urban Forum held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Ruto highlighted Kenya’s approach to financing, including raising local funds through the housing levy to reduce reliance on debt. The forum brought together ministerial representatives from over 40 African countries.

On the sidelines of the event, some of Nairobi County’s housing projects were showcased. This marks a shift from previous exhibitions of informal settlements like Kibera, once the largest in the region, which is now on track for eradication.

Ruto emphasized that strong political leadership and effective resource mobilisation at the highest level are key to achieving such progress, positioning Kenya as a model for affordable housing development in Africa.
