Kenya is exploring opportunities to expand its agricultural exports to North Africa, following a high-level bilateral meeting between Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe and Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Exports Promotion, Prof. Kamel Rezig on the sidelines of the UNFSS+4 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During the meeting, CS Kagwe emphasized Kenya’s interest in exporting milk powder, tea, and coffee to Algeria as part of a broader strategy to diversify markets and reduce post-harvest losses.

Kenya, which produced over 5.3 billion litres of milk last year, is now positioning itself to become a significant exporter of milk powder.

The two countries agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will promote mutually beneficial trade. Algeria committed to organizing an expo to showcase its products to Kenyan businesses, a move aimed at enhancing the balance of trade between the nations.

CS Kagwe also encouraged stronger trade ties with North African countries, noting that while some already buy Kenyan flowers, often routed through Amsterdam, direct trade could unlock greater value for both sides.

The talks are part of Kenya’s broader effort to tap into new markets and strengthen regional trade cooperation.
