Kenya has destroyed a massive consignment of methamphetamine valued at approximately KSh8.2 billion after the narcotics were intercepted during a multi-agency maritime operation in October 2025.
Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin joined Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, senior National Police Service (NPS) officials and other stakeholders for the destruction exercise in Mombasa.
The drugs were destroyed at Bamburi Cement, where security was heightened as authorities carried out the operation.
How was the KSh8.2 billion drug haul intercepted?
The massive consignment was seized in October 2025 following a multi-agency maritime operation targeting suspected narcotics trafficking along Kenya’s Indian Ocean waters.
A vessel believed to be carrying the methamphetamine was intercepted in the Indian Ocean off the Kenyan coast, leading to the recovery of the suspected narcotics. Authorities subsequently undertook the required legal processes before securing approval for the destruction of the drugs.
The consignment was destroyed under court supervision to ensure the process complies with legal requirements. The exercise brought together senior officials and officers from various security and law-enforcement agencies.
Security agencies said intelligence-led operations, cooperation between local agencies and partnerships with international counterparts remain central to efforts to disrupt organised narcotics trafficking networks.
