The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Board and senior management have concluded the first day of a two-day aerodrome development tour with visits to Suneka and Kabunde airstrips, highlighting ongoing investments aimed at strengthening regional air connectivity and economic growth.

At Suneka Airstrip in Kisii County, KAA Board Chair Caleb Kositany, accompanied by Kisii Governor Simba Arati, said rehabilitation works are progressing through the procurement stage, with construction expected to commence in the coming weeks.

Kositany noted that the upgrade will enhance regional access and support trade, agribusiness and private sector investment across Kisii and the surrounding region.

“This project will improve connectivity and open up economic opportunities for local communities by making the region more accessible,” he said.

The delegation later proceeded to Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay County, where they were hosted by the County Executive Committee Member for Roads, Public Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Danish Onyango.

During the visit, the team inspected the newly completed 1.4-kilometre runway extension, ongoing apron works and the proposed terminal site. The planned terminal is designed to handle up to one million passengers annually.

KAA officials said the developments position Kabunde Airstrip as a strategic hub for tourism growth, business development and improved regional logistics within the Lake Region and beyond.

KAA said the aerodrome development tour reflects the Authority’s commitment to expanding safe and efficient air transport infrastructure to support Kenya’s emerging economic corridors.
