Police officers in Isiolo County have received and secured an AK-47 rifle along with seven rounds of ammunition that were voluntarily surrendered by a member of the public, in a move authorities have described as a positive step towards enhancing security in the region.

In a statement, the National Police Service commended the individual for choosing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, noting that voluntary surrender of illegal weapons plays a crucial role in reducing crime and preventing violence. The police further encouraged anyone in possession of unauthorised firearms or ammunition to present them at the nearest police station, assuring the public that such actions contribute to safer communities.

Isiolo and parts of northern Kenya have in the past experienced security challenges linked to the proliferation of illegal firearms, including banditry, cattle rustling and armed robberies. Security agencies have been conducting continuous operations and community engagement initiatives to recover illegal weapons and curb criminal activities in the region.
