National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has broken his silence on reports linking him to the death of his longtime friend, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, saying the claims have caused him deep pain and unfair public judgment.

In an interview with TV47, Wetang’ula said he was never a suspect and was not questioned by police. Instead, he said he willingly went to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to help them understand Jirongo’s final movements.

“I went on my own. Nobody summoned me. Nobody interrogated me,” he said quietly.

The Speaker revealed that he last saw Jirongo on the night of December 12, when the two met at his Karen home between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

They spoke about normal life and business, then parted ways. The next day, he received the shocking news that his friend had died.

“It hit me very hard,” Wetang’ula said. “When you lose someone close, it stays with you.”

Moved by the loss, he reached out to investigators to record a statement, believing it was the right thing to do. But soon after, media reports emerged suggesting he was a suspect.

“I felt betrayed by the way the story was told,” he said. “It painted me as something I am not.”

He noted that several others who also recorded statements were never mentioned, yet he alone was singled out. He believes the reporting was meant to damage his name.

Wetang’ula said he has now asked his lawyers to take action to protect his reputation.

Despite the pain, he said he holds no bitterness and remains ready to support Jirongo’s family in any way possible.

“He was my friend,” he said. “And I will always honour that.”
