The Ministry of Health has announced the specific amount of money the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) pays daily for patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) and high-dependency units (HDU).

In a statement on Sunday, the ministry said the amount of cover for patients in these critical units varies for level 4, 5 and 6 hospitals.

For Lever 4 hospitals, SHIF pays KSh 3,360 per day and KSh 3,920 daily for Level 5 hospitals. For Level 6 hospitals, the insurance pays KSh KSh 4,480 per day.

The ministry said each household is entitled to a maximum of 180 days annually and will be required to top up any charges exceeding the cover limit.

Notably, patients can access services from empanelled Level 4-6 facilities countrywide and the cover limit is the same for public, faith-based, and private facilities.

The ministry shared the rates to clarify the growing concerns over how much Kenyans have to pay from their pockets under the new health insurance system.
