Kenya’s national women’s senior football team, the Harambee Starlets, will be aiming to maintain their unbeaten streak at the ongoing CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup when they face off against hosts Tanzania in a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash on Saturday in Dar es Salaam.
The Starlets secured their third straight win in the round-robin tournament after a dominant 4-0 victory over South Sudan on Thursday evening at the Azam Sports Complex.
Faith Mboya opened the scoring just three minutes into the match, giving Kenya an early lead. Despite sustained pressure, South Sudan held firm to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
However, the second half saw Kenya shift into a higher gear. Just two minutes after the restart, foreign-based striker Violet Nanjala doubled the advantage.
Martha Amunyolet added a third in the 66th minute, keeping herself in contention for the tournament’s Golden Boot. She now has four goals—just one behind Tanzania’s Opah Clement, who leads the scoring chart with five.
Elizabeth Ochaka sealed the emphatic win with a fourth goal deep into stoppage time, ensuring Kenya matched Tanzania on nine points.
However, Tanzania remains top of the standings by virtue of a superior goal difference.
Saturday’s encounter will likely decide the tournament’s frontrunner as both sides fight to preserve their perfect records and claim regional supremacy.
