Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that the resurgence of illicit alcohol in Central Kenya is being allowed by the government, accusing it of enabling the destruction of the region’s youth.
Speaking in Naivasha today, Gachagua suggested that the reappearance of harmful brews is part of a deliberate plan to reduce voter numbers in the area.
He alleged that after his removal from office, all the illicit alcohol was reintroduced to the region in an effort to harm the community and diminish voter participation.
“Chiefs have been instructed to ignore the situation, and the youth are being targeted,” Gachagua charged.
Prior to his impeachment, Gachagua had been actively fighting against the spread of illicit brews in the region.
In November, shortly after his ouster, Gachagua addressed the issue during a speech in Kirinyaga, urging President William Ruto to implement the same level of urgency in addressing alcoholism as was shown during his impeachment process.
“They shouldn’t bring back this alcohol now that I am out of office, as if my efforts were in vain. It’s not just me you’re harming; you’re hurting other children too,” Gachagua said.
