The government has urged the private sector to accelerate efforts to connect 8.5 million homes and businesses with fiber internet, aiming to bridge the digital divide and enhance access to affordable internet services across Kenya.

So far, the private sector has successfully connected 1.2 million homes and businesses to fiber, with ongoing initiatives targeting over 74,000 public institutions, including schools, county commissioners’ offices, chiefs’ offices, and hospitals.

To bolster this connectivity, the government has laid 14,000 kilometers of fiber cable, with a goal of extending this to 100,000 kilometers.

Speaking in Kakamega during the launch of the Jitume Digital Hubs, Town Hall Meeting, and Digital Economy Conference, Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy Dr. Margaret Ndung’u reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding the digital superhighway to rural areas.

“The government aims to ensure digital services are accessible at all locations, including homes, schools, hospitals, and chiefs’ camps, enabling easy access to documents,” Dr. Ndung’u stated. She emphasized that the expansion of fiber connectivity to villages would significantly reduce internet costs and unlock new opportunities in the digital economy.

Highlighting the importance of cybersecurity, Dr. Ndung’u also urged parents to promote safe internet practices at home. “Avoid giving kids digital devices and expecting them to navigate content on their own. Cyber hygiene is crucial as we increase connectivity,” she added.

Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui, emphasized the government’s focus on inclusivity in the digital space. He acknowledged the amendment of the NG-CDF Act, which now allows the fund to support the establishment of digital hubs in every ward.

“We want to ensure that no one is left behind. With the support of MPs, the digital hubs will soon become a reality, creating more opportunities for communities to engage in the digital economy,” Eng. Tanui remarked.

The ongoing expansion of fiber connections and digital hubs is expected to revolutionize access to digital services, furthering Kenya’s vision of becoming a global leader in the digital economy.
