The government has awarded a Sh29.2 billion contract for the dualling of the Muthaiga Roundabout–Kiambu Town road, with construction expected to commence soon in a major infrastructure project targeting improved connectivity between Kiambu and Nairobi.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced the development on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, saying the contractor was set to begin works on the busy transport corridor used daily by residents travelling to Nairobi for employment, business and other economic activities.

The project is expected to ease movement along the route linking Kiambu Town to the capital, where growing residential developments and commercial activities have increased demand for reliable transport infrastructure.

“With many residents of Kiambu Town commuting for work and business to and from Nairobi daily, Kiambu town and Nairobi city have close proximity and intertwined business and trade ties,” Kindiki said.

The dualling project is among the government’s infrastructure investments aimed at strengthening transport links between Nairobi and neighbouring counties while supporting economic activity along the corridor.

For Kiambu residents, the road upgrade is expected to address growing transport demands associated with the area’s expanding population and close economic relationship with the capital. However, the actual impact on congestion and travel times will depend on the project’s design, implementation and completion.

Beyond the road project, Kindiki highlighted investments in education and housing as part of the government’s development programme in Kiambu Town.

The former Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) has been elevated to a National Polytechnic, while construction of a student accommodation hostel with a capacity of 1,740 beds is underway at a cost of Sh672 million.

The hostel is expected to expand accommodation capacity at the institution as it serves students pursuing technical and vocational training.

Kindiki also said 1,977 housing units were being constructed in Kiambu Town under the Housing Fund at a cost of Sh5.2 billion.

Across Kiambu County, housing projects under the programme are valued at Sh52 billion, according to the Deputy President.

The investments form part of the government’s wider housing agenda, which combines residential construction with related infrastructure and facilities intended to support urban development.

Addressing residents of Kiambu Town, Kindiki urged them to support the government’s development agenda and called for peaceful political engagement.

He cautioned against violence, division and the politics of insults, urging residents to focus on development and constructive engagement.

The commencement of the Muthaiga Roundabout–Kiambu Town road project will be a key milestone to watch as residents and businesses await details on the construction schedule, implementation timelines and measures to manage traffic during the works.

The government’s delivery of the project will ultimately be assessed through its completion, the quality of the upgraded road and the benefits realised by commuters and businesses using the corridor.
