Garissa man has been handed a jail term of 25 years after being convicted of killing his neighbour in a savage attack that was triggered by the man’s wife affair claims that were false.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) secured the conviction of 44-year-old Salim Hukicho, who murder committed was proven to be under Section 203 as Section 204 of the Penal Code respectively.
Justice Jesse Nyaga delivered the sentence after deciding that the prosecution had established the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The court was told that on the evening of 4th September 2022, in Tarasaa Township, Hukicho assaulted Hassan Rona in his home and stabbed him in the stomach unprovoked. The wounds were so deep that the victim’s intestines came out, and he died at the scene.
The public rushed the accused to Tarasaa Police Station and further to the victim to Malindi Sub- County Hospital where he was confirmed dead. From the medical side, it was confirmed that Rona died due to the injuries inflicted during the assault.
Senior Prosecutor Counsel, Agather Mkongo, supported the issuance of a stern sentence, highlighting the barbarity of the murder and the necessity of safeguarding the public.
Further inquiries revealed that Hukicho acted on the mistaken belief that the deceased was involved with his wife. Evidence presented in the trial showed the woman was the victim’s ex-girlfriend and that they weren’t in a relationship at the time of the incident.
Justice Nyaga gave the convicted person a 14-day window to lodge an appeal against the sentencing.
