Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged residents of Ol Kalou Constituency to turn out in large numbers and vote in the ongoing by-election, describing the exercise as a defining moment in the struggle to restore the dignity and pride of the Mt Kenya region.

In a passionate message to voters on Wednesday morning, Gachagua invoked the legacy of freedom fighters J.M. Kariuki and Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, calling on residents to draw inspiration from their sacrifices and determination in the fight against colonial rule.

Addressing the people of Ol Kalou as descendants of the Mau Mau movement, the former Deputy President encouraged them to continue streaming to polling stations and to remain steadfast despite what he described as intimidation.

“We are priceless and will never sell our birthright to anyone, no matter the price,” Gachagua said, praising voters for their resilience and courage.

He singled out young people for commendation, thanking them for accompanying and protecting elderly voters as they headed to polling stations, describing the gesture as an important responsibility within the community.

Gachagua also praised women in the constituency, saying mothers had provided guidance and leadership that would ensure the community remained united in pursuing its political aspirations.

The former Deputy President urged all supporters of his political cause to cast their ballots before 11 a.m., while calling on younger voters to remain vigilant after voting to safeguard what he termed as the will of the people.

He expressed confidence that the outcome of the by-election would signal a political victory for the region and a restoration of its dignity and pride.

Gachagua further said residents across several counties and towns, including Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Laikipia, Nakuru and Nairobi, were closely following the election and were encouraged by reports of long queues and high voter turnout.

The Ol Kalou by-election has attracted significant political attention, with leaders viewing the contest as a key test of political influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
